Fun date idea in Sarasota, Florida: "A Night at the Opéra."

Updated: Dec 10, 2021

Don't let the title fool you, I'm still single! But, you should know that I am a hopeless romantic and a full-time daydreamer so I constantly do things that make my soul sing. This past weekend, I went to the Opera and had the best time so I want to share my experience with you.

Sarasota Opera

If you are in the Sarasota area, you need to check out one of the many theatres in town. I know I am biased because I live here but this was my first time visiting since I moved 4 years ago. Having lived in vibrant cities such as Miami and Barcelona, it has been super hard for me to adapt to the nightlife entertainment here. My little man has also been keeping me busy but every once in a while, I like to get dressed up and have a night to myself.

I am not going to pretend that I am an avid theatre goer, I am not! Your girl just loves to dress up whenever she can and has been hording vintage dresses for the past two years so it was only natural that I start wearing some of these beautiful finds. This town is a haven for vintage shopping, whether you are looking for clothes, furniture, books or one of a kind items but this subject deserves its own post so I will not be telling you more on here.

Sarasota, known as Florida's Cultural Coast, is home to a very vibrant and diverse art scene. From museums to art galleries, it seems like there is always something to see here and one of the most beloved activities of locals is attending live performances in any of the city's many theatres and performance halls. Some of the most frequented venues are:

To name only a few.

My parents have long been attending plays in town but I am not a huge fan of them and never felt the desire to participate in the activities. Last week when I was looking for something to do, I stumbled upon a post by the Sarasota Opera about the screening of a rom-com that I had never seen before so I decided to check it out. If you follow me on Instagram, you will see a video snippet of my experience there but I can give you all the deets on here as well.

The Opera House is screening classic movies every Saturday night this summer at 7:30 pm and the best part is you can also buy a glass wine! If you are not a fan of plays like me, it is a great opportunity to visit the Opera and enjoy something you like. I went all out with my outfit and even wore gloves to be in character. My date was my sister but a lot of couples were in attendance.

We purchased our tickets at the box office and grabbed drinks and snacks at their concession stand. One of the ushers then escorted us to our seats and we laughed the night away. The Opera is still following Covid safety guidelines and only operates at 50% capacity so the room filled up quickly.

I truly felt like a "Grande Dame" within the walls of the Opera even when my wine was served in a cup lol. The tickets were also very affordable, just $10 for any seat in the house, compared to what you would normally pay for a live play.

I will probably check out another venue once life goes back to normal and plays are in full swing again because this experience left me wanting more. I hope that you too can check it out and let me know how your night at the Opera was.

"Life is too short not to live it up a little!"
